"I'm not afraid of the surgery — I'm afraid of the anaesthesia." It is one of the sentences we hear most often in consultation. Yet modern anaesthesia, with proper patient preparation and fully equipped hospital infrastructure, is in the safest era of its history. This article explains anaesthesia types, safety standards, and how you yourself contribute to a safe operation.
Types of Anaesthesia: Which One, When?
General anaesthesia is the standard for comprehensive procedures — tummy tucks, breast surgery, combined operations — providing full unconsciousness and a secured airway. Sedation plus local anaesthesia is a comfortable alternative for limited procedures such as eyelid surgery or minor revisions.
The choice is made jointly by the surgeon and the anaesthesiologist, based on the scope of surgery and your health profile.
What Actually Determines Safety
Anaesthesia safety rests on three pillars: an experienced anaesthesiologist present throughout the operation, a fully equipped accredited hospital (continuous monitoring, intensive-care backup), and thorough patient assessment.
"Budget" operations performed in office settings or under-equipped facilities lack the capacity to respond when a complication occurs. When comparing prices, asking about the hospital standard is the single most important question a patient can ask.
Pre-Operative Assessment
Standard work-up includes blood tests, an ECG and, where needed, additional consultations such as cardiology. Every medication, herbal supplement and newer drug such as GLP-1 agents (Ozempic and similar) must be disclosed — for some, the timing of pausing before surgery is critical.
Smoking is the most preventable cause of anaesthetic and healing complications; quitting at least four weeks before surgery is required.
Notes for International Patients
Assessment for patients travelling to Türkiye runs in two stages: remote review of your medical history and tests first, then in-person examination and anaesthesia consultation in Istanbul. Our operations take place in fully equipped hospitals of JCI-accredited or equivalent standard.
Resting at least one day after your flight both reduces thrombosis risk and allows proper time for the pre-anaesthesia assessment.
Practical Information — Anaesthesia Safety in Plastic Surgery
Anaesthesia types: general / sedation+local; decision: surgeon + anaesthesiologist together; standard tests: blood panel, ECG; smoking: quit 4+ weeks before surgery; GLP-1 drugs: always disclose; hospital: fully equipped, accredited; surgery after a long-haul flight: at least 1 day's rest first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is general anaesthesia risky?
In healthy individuals, in accredited hospital conditions and with a specialist anaesthesia team, general anaesthesia is extremely safe. Risk is managed through patient selection, preparation quality and infrastructure — modern monitoring tracks every parameter in real time.
Is the fear of not waking up realistic?
The fear is common, but it does not match the statistics: serious anaesthetic complications in healthy patients occur at a rate of a few per million. Transparency throughout the assessment process is the best antidote to this anxiety.
Why do I need to fast before surgery?
To prevent stomach contents entering the lungs during anaesthesia (aspiration). The standard rule is no solid food for 6-8 hours before surgery; for GLP-1 users this window may be extended under a specific protocol.
What is the difference between sedation and general anaesthesia?
Sedation provides deep, sleep-like comfort while you breathe on your own, with the surgical area numbed locally. Under general anaesthesia, consciousness is fully switched off and your airway is secured by the anaesthesia team.
