Arm Lift (Brachioplasty): A Lasting Fix for Sagging Upper Arms

2026-06-10

Sagging upper arms — "bat wings" — are the combined result of weight loss, ageing and genetics, and among the most exercise-resistant areas of the body. Triceps work strengthens the muscle but cannot retract skin that has lost its elasticity. An arm lift (brachioplasty) permanently removes that excess skin and fat.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The ideal candidate has visible skin excess along the inner arm, a stable weight and good general health. Laxity after major weight loss — whether through GLP-1 medication, bariatric surgery or diet — is the most typical reason for consultation.

If the issue is mainly fat with good skin elasticity, liposuction alone may be sufficient; skin quality is the single most important assessment at consultation.

Where Does the Scar Sit?

In a classic brachioplasty, the scar runs along the inner arm from the armpit towards the elbow, hidden on the inner line so it is not visible with the arms at your sides. For limited laxity, a "mini brachioplasty" can confine the scar to the armpit crease.

Scar quality depends on tension-free closure, consistent silicone care and sun protection. Pink at first, the scar fades over 12-18 months. Technical details on all procedures are available on the procedures page.

The Operation and Combinations

Surgery takes 2-3 hours under general anaesthesia; in most cases liposuction accompanies skin excision so the whole arm contour is slimmed. Combining with a breast lift or tummy tuck in the same session is common among major weight loss patients.

A one-night hospital stay is typical; drain use varies with technique.

Recovery

Keep the arms elevated above heart level as much as possible for the first two weeks; a compression sleeve is worn for 4-6 weeks. Desk work resumes in 1-2 weeks; heavy lifting and sport at six weeks.

Avoid sudden, wide arm-opening movements in the early weeks to protect the suture line from tension.

Practical Information — Arm Lift

Operation: 2-3 hours; anaesthesia: general; hospital: 1 night; compression sleeve: 4-6 weeks; return to desk work: 1-2 weeks; sport: 6 weeks; scar: inner arm, fades over 12-18 months; flying home: usually after day 7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will exercise fix sagging arms?

Muscle tone improves the appearance somewhat, but skin that has lost elasticity will not retract with exercise. For visible skin excess, surgery is the lasting solution.

How visible is the arm lift scar?

The scar is placed along the inner arm where it is hidden with the arms at your sides. Pink in the early months, it fades to a pale line over 12-18 months with silicone care and sun protection.

Wouldn't liposuction alone be enough?

Yes — if skin elasticity is good and the problem is mainly fat. With significant skin laxity, however, liposuction alone can worsen the sag; the right indication is determined at examination.

Is the result permanent?

The removed skin and fat do not return; as long as your weight stays stable, the result is long-lasting. Natural ageing of course continues.
