Istanbul is one of the most popular destinations in the world for plastic surgery. But having surgery in another city — especially if you are travelling from abroad — requires good planning. This guide clarifies the logistics: how long to stay, where to stay, whether to bring a companion and when you can fly home.
How Long Should You Stay?
Length of stay depends on the procedure. A general framework:
Rhinoplasty: Around 7-10 days. A follow-up on day 7 is needed to remove the cast; flying becomes safe afterwards. See our article on flying after rhinoplasty for detail.
Breast and body procedures (augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck): 7-10 days, recommended for initial checks and drain/suture care.
Combined procedures (e.g. mommy makeover): 10-14 days, requiring more extensive recovery and follow-up.
These are averages; your surgeon will set the exact duration based on your individual plan.
Accommodation: Where to Stay
Comfort and proximity to the clinic matter during recovery. Dr. Erdal's clinic is in Şişli Teşvikiye, within walking distance of Nişantaşı. The area, with its hotels, pharmacies and calm setting, is well suited to recovery. Choose accommodation near the clinic for easy access to follow-ups. A quiet room with an elevator, suited to rest, makes recovery easier.
Should You Bring a Companion?
A companion is strongly recommended, especially for the first 24-48 hours. A companion helps with transport, medication tracking, meals and daily needs. Not being alone on the first day after general anesthesia is important for safety. If you are travelling alone, you can discuss caregiver-support solutions with the clinic coordinator; our article on caregivers and recovery is also helpful.
Transfers and Getting Around
Planning transfers between airport, accommodation, clinic and hospital in advance reduces stress. Traffic in Istanbul can be heavy; schedule appointments and follow-ups accordingly. Arrange transport to and from the hospital on the day of surgery.
The Return Flight: When Is It Safe?
Your return flight should be planned only after your surgeon's approval. Flying requires timing in terms of circulation (clot risk, especially on long flights), pressure changes and swelling. Typically you return after the first follow-up, in line with the stay durations above. Booking a flexible return ticket helps if an unexpected check-up is needed.
Practical Preparation Checklist
Passport and travel insurance; comfortable, front-buttoning clothes (pullover styles can strain the surgical area); your prescription medications; your surgeon's contact details; and basics for the recovery period (water, light snacks, an extra pillow to elevate your head). For a broader overview, see our 14-day medical tourism timeline.
In Summary
A well-planned trip makes your recovery easier and the process stress-free. Confirm your length of stay with your surgeon, stay near the clinic, bring a companion where possible, and plan your return flight for after the follow-up.
